realize our dream of
using great music
to bring people
together across
racial boundaries.
Every Monday night a beautiful thing happens in Richmond, Virginia -- about 100 people come together to sing great music and experience the enriching power of choral music to bring together people historically separated by a long and difficult racial history.
With its members coming from all walks of life and across all kinds of racial and cultural boundaries, One Voice Chorus has a unique place in the Richmond arts community.
A community chorus in its truest sense, no audition is required for this "y'all come" group - all are welcome, without regard to race or creed or anything else. But our mission is specific - through our music, membership and outreach programs, One Voice works toward positive, healing relationships between Americans of African and of European descent. Click here to see our Mission and Values.
How are we doing? Pretty well, judging by the numbers. The chorus averages over 100 singers in each of the three major concerts we sing every year. Our ethnic balance reflects the Richmond Metro area: about 65% European American, 30% African American, and 5% other races. Since 2002, hundreds - yes, hundreds - of singers have responded to our signature invitation, “Y’all come!” As of May, 2010, we have presented 28 major concerts and more than 60 community events for diverse audiences of almost 25,000 people.
But can we sing?? Frankly, yes. Audience members are impressed when they hear us, and amazed to discover that there really are no auditions required to be in One Voice. We're diverse in the music that we sing as well as in our singers. Each year we present three major concerts:
| • |
a choral concert featuring traditional Spirituals along with other choral repertoire |
| • |
a jazz concert with wonderful guest artists from the Richmond jazz community |
| • |
a classical concert, often a large work and usually accompanied by orchestra |
We sing it all, from Beethoven to Fats Waller!

So why not come join us, either as a singer or in the audience? There's a place for you in One Voice.
"Through your music and living example, you demonstrate a vision of what the community could be as we learn to share the richness of our diversity."
