Mapping Cville: Legacy of Racial Covenants

  • Jefferson School African American Heritage Center Charlottesville, VA USA (map)

Jordy Yager, Digital Humanities Fellow at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, will present the Mapping Cville project that documents the historic housing discrimination from racist covenants that prohibited sale of homes to African Americans in Charlottesville. These practices spanned more than 70 years and enabled white people to build wealth through home ownership while denying Black residents access to capital, neighborhood infrastructure, and opportunities for advancement. Yager will share how past decisions and patterns have impacted today’s realities—90 years later, some Charlottesville neighborhoods still have a large majority of white residents.

After the presentation, attendees can participate in the Q&A via chat.
