Celebrate MLK: Richmond Symphony Orchestra

  • Perkinson Center for the Arts & Education 11810 Centre Street Chester, VA USA (map)

This concert for all generations celebrates the inspiring message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through an uplifting and diverse repertoire featuring spirituals, hymns and other stirring compositions by Black artists of the past and present, with an emphasis on Virginia voices.

The concert will start with a special welcome from the Black History Museum of Virginia’s Board President, Dr. Monroe E. Harris, Jr. The fantastic Brown Ballerinas for Change, a local social justice organization formed to increase participation of underrepresented populations in ballet, will perform during the concert. Isaac Wilson, a talented member of the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra Program, will be a featured violin soloist. Living Virginian composers Adolphus Hailstork and Damien Geter (current Richmond Symphony Composer-in-Residence) complete the program with selections from their canon.
